Inspiration
You know that feeling when you were having a conversation with someone and you just wish you could pull out that perfect meme in your head that you know would fit that exact moment?
Well, look no further. Stonks is here to help. Whether you're feeling bored in classes, crashing out over months worth of exam materials, or your sports team loses (again), there's always a meme for that.
What it does
The idea is simple. Just type in your situation into the box. The input will be parsed into keywords, and the app will search that keyword through my humongous collections of memes (we're talking GBs worth of memes which I have collected since 2021 for fun). The app also have a button "Donate memes here" which allow users to add their memes into my meme collection.
Anyways, user input --> search meme keyword --> output meme Of course, there's only so much meme that I can tag at a time, so the result might still be not 100% accurate. If you want to help tag them, feel free to do so too i don't really care.
If you just want random memes, you can also just click 'Generate meme' and the app finna serve some random ahh memes.
Stonks' mission is to support memes of multiple languages. Currenlty mainly supporting these languages:
- Bahasa Melayu
- Bahasa Indonesia
- Francais
- English
- Mandarin
- Arabic
Why these languages first? Well, cuz for now I can only understand the memes from these languages (duhhh). More languages will be supported as I learn more languages and understand more memes.
But why even make it support multiple languages? Because at Stonks, we (me, myself, and I) believe that the meme culture should transcend any spoken language.
How we built it
I used ReactJS for the frontend. Hosted the frontend and backend separately on Vercel. The backend uses Node and acts as the middleman to pull data from my meme Drive collection before serving the data to the frontend. I also used PearAi to help with debugging and work around the CORS struggles.
Challenges we ran into
- Frontend cannot pull directly from Drive, so I had to use a middleware (the backend). Google implemented a CORS restriction I believe, which sucks but I kinda fw to prevent malicious scams, hacks, etc.
- Initially wanted to deploy the backend on Render but already got a project there and I can only deploy one project at a time for a free account. I ain't paying lol.
- Also wanted to deploy the project as a monorepo on Vercel but it got so complicated and it seems to have not been supported yet (or so I thought). Took too much time that I decided to just deploy them separately.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- The app got hosted
- I laughed a lot while making this
- Raised a lot of meme donations in its initial days (25 public donated memes in the first 3 days 😎)
What we learned
- The meme culture shouldn't be restricted by spoken language. It should speak louder than any words could.
What's next for Stonks
- Buy a proper domain name (when somebody wanna sponsor me or when I ain't broke no more ofc)
- Support more languages (if I can get more people donating memes from multiple languages ofc)
- implement some search algorithms and eventually AI/ML for more tailored memes and caption generation
- might implement localStorage or eventually enable users to create and login into accounts so they can keep track of their meme karma or something.
- might enable users to choose languages cuz I know most of y'all are just some lame ahh "mOnOLiNgUaLs"
Disclaimer
If you're offended by any memes generated by the app, it's yo soft ahh self's fault ngl. Just suck it up, say womp womp, and move on.
Appreciations
Thank you to me, myself, I, Jarvis a.k.a ChatGPT & PearAi, and everyone who used the App and donated memes. Y'all the goat fr. Shoutout to my cat back home too.
