Inspiration
We want to help struggling families in our community be successful and find the resources they need.
What it does
The app connects you with clothing, food, transportation, housing and other resources that struggling families would find useful.
How I built it
Quentin coded the project in MIT App Builder. Madison created the icons for the navigation bar. Anakin drew the logo. Samantha drew the graphics online for two of the screens. Anastazia drew the graphics for one of the screens and researched poverty statistics. All team members researched organizations that provided transportation or food pantry and thrift stores as well as low income housing. We also researched low fee banks, mental health services and animal shelters.
Challenges I ran into
Because not all the team members can be in the room at one time, we had a hard time completing the work in the time frame allocated. In addition, it was hard to make traditional art into digital art. Stokes County Schools is on a Hybrid A/B day schedule with some students learning at home on Plan C. Fortunately, we met online everyday to check in and discuss projects and deadlines.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud that we finished it, because there were many moments where we considered throwing in the towel. We are a very rural county and our internet connections are not always strong. The App Developer had a steep learning curve and only 1 member of the team had an android phone. The emulator for our Chromebooks didn't work. Regardless, we persisted!
What I learned
The team learned how to persevere! In addition, they learned about time management and deadlines.
What's next for Stokes County Helping Hands
We look forward to finding out the results of the competition. Also we plan to show the app to members of the non-profit communities the app focuses on to get their feedback.
