Inspiration

All of our team members were new to coding and python was the only language that we at least knew about in common. While researching what we can do with python, we found out that python is an excellent language for making bots and visualizing data. So we decided to incorporate these two and create a bot that visualizes stock data and lets people with no coding knowledge to easily get stock info.

What it does

It has bunch of commands that the people in discord servers can call such as $plot, $between, etc... and it responds to the user and sends back the information that user wants.

How I built it

We used discord's developer Portal to first create the Bot with send message, manage message, read message history, attach files authorizations. Then, we made the python code to connect to the bot. After that, we made the bot recognize the user commands and send back the information.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge we faced upon approaching this project was learning how to integrate our previous knowledge of python with the discord bot creation API. This, along with the Yfinance API, were both entirely unknown to us before beginning this project.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Successfully learning how to use and integrate multiple APIs together was our greatest achievement in this project. We feel like making something that is easy for anyone to integrate and use, and actually provides a useful function, is the greatest thing we achieved in this project.

What I learned

Over the course of this project, we had to learn a variety of things that were previously foreign to us. This includes learning how to use the discord bot creation tools, along with the discord bot API for python. We also needed to learn how to integrate that with the Yfinance API in order to have the bot function as was required of it.

What's next for StockBot

In the future, we could add more useful functions to the bot, along with streamlining and improving existing functions. Features like being able to compare two graphs, company name to ticker symbol conversion (eg. $ticker microsoft would yield MSFT in response).
