Inspiration

We wanted to make stock market learning engaging instead of intimidating. Most investing platforms feel overwhelming for beginners, while games often lack real-world value. STOCK REALM was inspired by the idea of combining real-time market data with gamification — creating a competitive, rewarding environment where users can learn investing risk-free using virtual currency.

What it does

STOCK REALM is a gamified stock market simulation platform where users trade real-world assets using virtual money. Players can:

  • Invest in live stocks using real-time market data
  • Track profits, losses, and portfolio growth
  • Earn XP, badges, streaks, and daily rewards
  • Compete on leaderboards with other users
  • Unlock cosmetic items and rewards
  • Use advanced trading features like intraday trading, GTT orders, limit orders, and stop-loss systems
  • Build watchlists and monitor live charts/news

The platform creates a realistic trading experience without financial risk.

We designed the UI with a dark-mode-first, premium gaming aesthetic inspired by fantasy sports dashboards and modern fintech apps.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was handling real-time portfolio updates while maintaining performance and accuracy. Since stock prices constantly fluctuate, syncing user holdings, rankings, and rewards required careful database structuring and realtime event handling.

We also faced challenges integrating advanced trading systems like:

  • GTT (Good Till Triggered) orders
  • Stop-loss logic
  • Intraday trading behavior
  • Real-time leaderboard rendering

Balancing gamification with realistic investing mechanics was another major challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully built a fully functional stock trading simulator with live market integration
  • Implemented gamification systems including XP, streaks, badges, and rewards
  • Added advanced trading tools typically found in professional trading platforms
  • Created a polished retro-modern UI with responsive design
  • Built scalable database architecture with realtime updates
  • Designed a competitive leaderboard ecosystem with ranking systems

Most importantly, we created a platform that makes financial learning genuinely fun and engaging.

What we learned

Through building STOCK REALM, we learned:

  • The complexity behind trading systems and portfolio management
  • Best practices for building responsive full-stack applications with Next.js and Supabase

We also learned how important UI/UX is in keeping users motivated and immersed.
