Inspiration

We were inspired by the amazing capabilities of LLMs to transform existing text with the level of creativity, speed and cost effectiveness that is not available to humans. We think that a lot of projects are focusing on stretching out the capabilities of LLMs, but few are paying attention to existing ones and trying to take advantage of them. So we did.

What it does

The product explains, entertains and enchants everyone who wants to read and learn more about all the classic books in the world. It brings the content of the books to the reader’s world and style, bridging people and literature that should be accessible for everyone. From reshaping a Silicon Valley classic like 'Zero to One' into an engaging read for my grandpa who runs a mom-and-pops store, to presenting the profound stoic insights of 'The Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius with a playful Dr. Seuss twist for my younger cousins.

How we built it

We sourced, cleaned, and parsed one of the most influential texts in the history of humanity. Then we built a pipeline that would take in the text and produce a book formatted manuscript that we can publish to Amazon kindle store. We created all the designs for books and the website where people can actually order all the books and enjoy them.

Challenges we ran into

Product: We want the literature to be impactful and truly transgress cultural boundaries. Finding the right prompts, parsing of text and having a good understanding of gpt’s tokenization was challenging: how do you maintain the dense, context specific lessons and story arch of the Odyssey in a captivating way that works in a rewritten version of modern day, so that is engaging and relatable and extract the timeless lessons? Creativity: figuring out which styles juxtapose in an entertaining and intuitive way was hard but fun to figure out. We discovered creative heuristics, like going from complex concepts to simple (f.e. scaling a billion dollar company explained in children’s metaphors)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Re-styling and formatting eight books in the span of twenty-four hours
    • Coming up with a juxtaposing style for each work which increases the accessibility of the work to a wider audience or highlights a previously subtle aspect of the work. ## What we learned The most important thing that we learned is that we are still unaware of many really useful applications of LLMs and people need to use their imagination to focus on existing capabilities instead of always looking into the future ## What's next for Stochastic Parrot Press Creating and publishing more books, printing them and allowing people to buy them
