Inspiration
I started this app for last year’s Shipaton, mainly for my mom and sister, but never finished it. This year, I looked at similar apps and found them either too complicated or unstable. That gave me the push to come back and finish mine.
What it does
Skeina turns photos into cross-stitch patterns with DMC thread colors. You can adjust the size and colors, follow the chart on your phone, mark completed stitches, or export a PDF to print.
How I built it
I built it with Swift and SwiftUI, using Apple Vision for background removal and custom image processing to match photos to DMC colors. RevenueCat handles subscriptions and paywalls, and Mixpanel handles analytics.
Challenges and what I learned
The hardest part was turning photos into patterns that look good and are practical to stitch. I worked on reducing color noise, keeping charts readable, and making PDF exports work across multiple pages.
It also reminded me how much work goes into making an app feel simple.
The biggest challenge ahead is marketing.
What’s next
I’d like to improve the photo-to-pattern conversion, which still needs some work, and make better use of the iPad’s larger screen. I also want to add backstitches and more thread brands, and keep improving the app based on feedback from my family and other stitchers.
