Inspiration

Inspiration

Smell affects how we experience restaurants, hotels, shops, public spaces, products, and everyday life, yet consumers have no simple way to share this invisible part of an experience.

But “stink” is not always literal. A product can stink because it fails to deliver what was promised. A service can stink because of poor functionality, misleading marketing, unfair treatment, or terrible customer care.

StinkRadar was created to give consumers a voice and make the gap between promises and reality visible. But the purpose is not only to expose problems or punish businesses. Companies should also have a fair opportunity to listen, respond, take responsibility, and Make It Right.

A bad experience does not have to be the end of the story. When a company genuinely solves the problem, it can rebuild trust and turn a disappointed customer into a loyal supporter.

That idea became the foundation of StinkRadar:

Spot it. Report it. Make it right.

What it does

StinkRadar is a consumer platform for discovering, rating, and sharing experiences that either smell good or stink.

Users can report literal scent experiences connected to places and products. They can also flag companies, services, and products that “stink” because they do not live up to their promises in areas such as functionality, quality, honesty, or customer care.

The goal is not simply to complain. StinkRadar turns individual experiences into structured and constructive feedback. Every consumer can become their own influencer: one honest report may protect other consumers, reward companies that deliver, and encourage underperforming businesses to improve.

Make It Right

StinkRadar is built around accountability, but also second chances.

Through the Make It Right feature, a company can respond to a report, explain what happened, offer a solution, and show what it has changed. The consumer can then confirm whether the company genuinely made things right.

A negative experience can become a verified recovery story, rewarding businesses that listen, take responsibility, and improve.

StinkRadar does not only reveal what stinks. It creates a constructive path from disappointment to resolution.

How we built it

We used Codex with GPT-5.6 as a creative and technical partner to develop the concept, product structure, user experience, visual identity, MVP, and future business model.

Codex helped transform a simple observation — “Why can’t we review smells?” — into a broader consumer platform for revealing what smells good, what works well, and what simply stinks.

The collaboration also made it possible for a non-technical founder to turn an idea into a coherent product direction and working prototype.

Challenges we faced

Smell and customer experiences are both personal and subjective. The main challenge was creating a rating experience that feels simple and entertaining while remaining fair, respectful, and useful.

We also had to design the concept so it could address literal smells, product performance, broken promises, and customer care without becoming confusing or turning into an unconstructive complaint platform.

Another challenge was balancing accountability with fairness. This led to the Make It Right concept, which gives businesses a constructive way to respond while allowing consumers to decide whether the problem was genuinely resolved.

What we learned

We learned that invisible problems can still create measurable value.

Aggregated feedback could help consumers, hospitality businesses, retailers, municipalities, manufacturers, and service providers identify patterns that individual reviews cannot reveal.

We also learned that complaints become more valuable when they lead to action. Giving companies an opportunity to Make It Right creates a healthier relationship between consumers and businesses.

Most importantly, we learned how quickly a non-technical founder can move from an idea to a working product direction by collaborating with Codex and GPT-5.6.

What’s next

Next, StinkRadar will expand its rating system, location discovery, business responses, verification, trend analysis, and community features.

Future versions will allow consumers to follow their reports, see company responses, confirm successful resolutions, and build influence through useful and trustworthy contributions.

The long-term vision includes consumer influence scores, business insights, verified Smelling Good awards, warnings when promises and reality do not match, and an annual StinkRadar gala celebrating the places, products, and companies that make the world work — and smell — better.

Spot it. Report it. Make it right.
