Inspiration

This project was born from my deep connection to Ukrainian folklore and the question of national identity, which has become painfully urgent during the war in my country.
Our culture, language, and traditions are not just history — they are the threads that hold us together in the dark.
I wanted to preserve that spirit through modern technology, letting ancient myths come alive in digital form.
“Still Waters Run Deep” grows from old legends about mermaids and the Kupala Night — where love, fear, and nature intertwine into one fate.

What it does

The film reimagines a folk legend through the lens of artificial intelligence, blending traditional storytelling with cinematic aesthetics.
It brings to life the mystical and tragic atmosphere of Ukrainian mythology, exploring human emotions — love, guilt, and longing.

How we built it

I combined Midjourney, Kling, and Runway for imagery and motion, along with Photoshop and Topaz for enhancement and detail.
Each frame was crafted like a painting — inspired by embroidery patterns, natural textures, and soft folklore light.
Editing and sound design were done manually to build rhythm and emotional progression.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest part was keeping authenticity while working with machine-generated visuals.
AI doesn’t understand cultural nuance — I had to “teach” it through references and corrections until the story felt true.
Another challenge was emotional: telling a story about love and loss during wartime is both pain and truth at once.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud that this film conveys the Ukrainian soul through modern tools — showing that AI can preserve culture, not replace it.
The film won First Place in the “AI Vision Ukraine” nomination at the MEGOGO Film Festival, proving that even digital myths can carry human warmth.

What we learned

I learned that AI can be deeply poetic when guided by human intention.
It’s not about perfection — it’s about sensitivity.
Every glitch or artifact became part of the texture, a metaphor for the fragility of memory and myth.

What's next for Still Waters Run Deep

The next project continues exploring Ukrainian folklore — this time through the sacred symbolism of traditional embroidery.
Using AI and cinematic storytelling, I aim to show how every pattern holds protection, history, and the invisible spirit of generations.
