Inspiration

The idea for Stiffy Wanderers emerged from a desire to blend nature with gaming. We wanted to create a playful experience that encourages players to interact with their environment while having fun. The concept of a rock with googly eyes reflects our whimsical take on nature and allows for humorous interactions. Additionally, the idea of weathering and cracking rocks draws inspiration from the natural processes that occur around us, inviting players to think about the elements in a unique way.

What it does

Stiffy Wanderers is an interactive mobile game where players guide a cute rock with googly eyes through various environmental conditions to make it weather and eventually crack. The game features a map that shows the player’s real-time location, allowing them to explore different areas. As players visit specific locations, they trigger missions that provide opportunities for rewards. Completing these missions helps players collect various rock types, each with unique characteristics and visuals, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

How we built it

We built Stiffy Wanderers using React Native for cross-platform compatibility, allowing us to create a seamless experience on both iOS and Android devices. The game leverages GPS tracking to identify player locations and trigger missions based on proximity to specific landmarks. We utilized libraries like React Navigation for managing in-app navigation and integrated APIs for real-time location updates. The visuals were crafted using a combination of vector graphics and animations, ensuring a playful and engaging aesthetic. We also incorporated sound design to enhance the experience, adding playful sound effects and background music.

Challenges we ran into

During the development process, we encountered several challenges. One of the main issues was accurately integrating GPS functionalities, especially in urban environments where signals can be unreliable. We also faced difficulties in balancing the gameplay mechanics to ensure that players felt rewarded without making the tasks too easy. Additionally, designing intuitive user interfaces that communicated the game's mechanics effectively while maintaining a visually appealing layout was a challenge, particularly in a cross-platform environment.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of creating an engaging and whimsical game environment that captures the essence of exploration and interaction with nature. The successful integration of real-world locations into the gameplay adds a layer of excitement and encourages players to venture outdoors. Moreover, we are pleased with the unique character design of the rock, which has resonated well with our playtesters, drawing smiles and laughter.

What we learned

Throughout the development of Stiffy Wanderers, we learned the importance of user feedback. Playtesting sessions provided invaluable insights into player behavior and preferences, guiding us in refining the gameplay experience. We also gained a deeper understanding of React Native's capabilities, particularly in handling real-time GPS data and creating a smooth user experience. Furthermore, we discovered how humor and charm in character design can significantly enhance player engagement.

What's next for Stiffy Wanderers

Looking ahead, we plan to expand Stiffy Wanderers with additional features, including new types of rocks with different abilities, seasonal events, and community challenges that encourage players to connect with one another. We aim to enhance the mission system, introducing story elements and interactive tasks that provide a richer narrative experience. Additionally, we are exploring partnerships with environmental organizations to promote outdoor activities and awareness, making Stiffy Wanderers not just a game, but also a platform for positive engagement with nature.
