Inspiration

Our journey began with a desire to create a mixed reality application that was not only innovative but also deeply functional, addressing everyday needs. During brainstorming sessions, we noticed our workspace was cluttered with numerous sticky notes. This observation sparked the idea to transpose this common physical tool into the mixed reality realm, thus the concept for our sticky note application was born.

What it does

Our application enables users to place virtual sticky notes within their physical environment. Users can effortlessly dictate their thoughts into these notes using voice commands. These sticky notes are anchored in space, ensuring that their position and content are consistently maintained across sessions, thanks to the use of spatial anchors.

How we built it

We crafted this application with the Unity game engine, leveraging both pre-built assets like Blocks and sample scenes, alongside our specialized development skills. This combination allowed us to efficiently build a robust mixed reality experience.

Challenges we ran into

One significant hurdle was managing the various Android permissions required for the app. Initially, we placed the voice permission request in the same scene where it was used, but this led to initialization conflicts between the spatial and voice permissions, creating a challenging puzzle to solve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of integrating voice dictation capabilities. Users can speak to create notes, which are then saved and can be displayed as resizable text blocks within their virtual environment. This feature greatly enhances the flexibility and utility of taking notes in mixed reality.

What we learned

The development process was a tremendous learning curve where we delved deep into the capabilities of Meta and Unity's tools for mixed reality development. These tools were not only powerful but also user-friendly, which streamlined our development process significantly.

What's next for Sticky Space

Looking forward, we are excited to launch our application on App Lab, aiming to gather a robust user base to secure a spot on the Quest store. We plan to expand the app's functionality with in-app purchases, introducing new features, enhancements, and essential updates to enrich user experience continuously.
