Inspiration 💡
StickShuttle was born from a love of classic arcade games and the simple joy of badminton. Growing up playing games like Pong and spending countless hours drawing stick figures in notebooks, I wanted to create something that captured that pure, minimalist fun while adding modern gameplay mechanics.
What it Does 🎮
StickShuttle is a pixel art badminton game where stick figure athletes compete in fast-paced matches. Players can:
- Perform trick shots and special moves
- Challenge friends in local multiplayer
- Progress through increasingly difficult AI opponents
- Unlock secret characters with unique abilities
- Master the physics-based shuttle mechanics
How I Built It 🛠️
The development journey involved:
- Creating frame-by-frame pixel art animations for fluid character movement
- Implementing realistic shuttle physics with wind resistance
- Building a responsive control system that feels tight and precise
- Designing an AI system that provides challenging but fair matches
- Crafting retro-style sound effects and chiptune music
Challenges 🤔
The biggest hurdles included:
- Balancing the physics to feel arcade-like while maintaining competitive depth
- Creating smooth animations with minimal pixels while keeping characters recognizable
- Developing AI opponents that play realistically without being predictable
- Optimizing performance to maintain consistent 60 FPS on all devices
What I Learned 📚
This project taught me valuable lessons about:
- Game feel and juice - small details make huge differences
- The importance of playtesting and iteration
- Finding the sweet spot between accessibility and depth
- Performance optimization in 2D games
- The art of pixel animation and sound design
What's Next 🚀
Future updates will include:
- Online multiplayer
- Tournament mode
- Custom character creator
- More special moves and power-ups
- Additional court variations
StickShuttle proves that sometimes the simplest ideas make the most engaging games. By combining retro aesthetics with modern game design principles, we've created something that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
