Inspiration
San Diego’s art scene is spread across neighborhoods that rarely get connected in one place: Balboa Park’s museums, the murals of Barrio Logan, the studios of Point Loma, and La Jolla’s oceanfront galleries. Steven Lash San Diego wanted a single guide that visitors and locals could browse quickly on a phone.
What it does
Browse 14 venues by neighborhood using a simplified map of the city. Filter to places that cost nothing or are pay what you wish. Search by type, such as murals, theater or galleries. Star favorites, which stay saved in your browser. Open directions to any venue in one tap.
How I built it
The guide is a single web page built with plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no framework. Venue details live in a small data list, and all filtering runs in the browser. The map is a hand drawn SVG. The page supports light and dark mode, works at phone width, and is fully usable with a keyboard.
Challenges I ran into
Venue details change often. The Museum of Photographic Arts joined The San Diego Museum of Art in 2023, and only the La Jolla location of MCASD is open right now, so every listing was checked against current venue information. Pinning each venue at its precise location crowded Balboa Park into one spot, so the map pins neighborhoods instead.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The guide is fast, readable in both light and dark mode, and works well on a phone. It points people toward free and low cost options across the city.
What I learned
A good local guide depends more on accurate, current details than on features.
