Inspiration
I am mechanical engineering specialized in vibrations. While watching how the recent pandemic of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is causing a lot of deaths worldwide and it led to lockdown in most of the countries and economic damage. I have gathered a team to apply simple concepts hoping it will affect our world war against this pathogen.
What it does
We have recalled a basic phenomenon that Anybody – which is consisted of some certain substances – has a definitive physical attribute which can be defined by the term of The Natural Frequency of this body. If this body – in a way or another – is subjected to a generated frequency which is equal to its Natural Frequency, it collapses. This phenomenon is called the Resonance Effect. On the basis of this scientific fact, So, Each pathogen including viruses has it’s own resonant frequency and upon exposure to this frequency, the virus will be destructed by mechanical stress. The idea is to present a Mobile Application that is connected to a means that is able to generate the needed frequency that shall be equal to the Natural Frequency of a certain noxious pathogen and as a result, this pathogen collapses and the surrounding environment satisfies its needed level of Sterilization. The challenge was to know the range of frequencies needed, but literature was sufficient to predict the range of frequencies that we can use at the start to be tested
How we built it
It consists of two main parts: The Mobile Application and The Gun. The Mobile Application is built using Javascript and React Native Cross-Platform. The Gun is built using three main parts: a Wireless Receiver, a Frequency Generator, and an Ultrasonic Transducer. There are two configurations of the Gun: The first has A Raspberry Pi board (as a Wireless Receiver and a host for needed Software), a USB Function Generator (as a Frequency Generator) and an Ultrasonic Transducer where the SmartPhone communicates with the Raspberry Pi in a wireless way (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) and the Raspberry Pi – which contains the needed software for the Function Generator – commands the Function Generator to generate a Sine Wave with the needed frequency which is transformed by the Ultrasonic Transducer to Sound/Ultrasonic waves needed to collapse the intended pathogen but, the second has A Bluetooth Module (as a Wireless Receiver), a Microcontroller Board (as a Frequency Generator) and an Ultrasonic Transducer where the SmartPhone communicates with the Microcontroller in a wireless way (Bluetooth) through the Bluetooth Module by certain commands which are interpreted by the microcontroller to generate a Sine Wave with the needed frequency which is transformed by the Ultrasonic Transducer to Sound/Ultrasonic waves needed to collapse the intended pathogen.
Challenges we ran into
The first challenge we had, is that the idea was to create the needed Ultrasonic waves using only the Smartphone but, it was faced by the limitation that the frequencies generated by the Smart Phone are limited by only 25 kHz and we need more than 300 kHz so, we have thought about an additional means to our Mobile Application to achieve the needed frequencies. And secondly, for the Hardware part (The Gun), we had run into the challenge of the trade-off between the quality of the generated waves and the cost of the used hardware so, we have presented two solutions. At first, the quality of the generated waves is great but the hardware cost is higher. In the second one, we have concentrated our efforts to achieve a cheaper solution with acceptable quality which has been achieved. Thirdly, Generating a sample tone from the IOS platform had been a challenging thing!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of overcoming the limitation of The Smart Phone to generate the needed frequencies. Also, we have to be proud of presenting solutions that are much cheaper in comparison with other presented concepts or pre-existed solutions.
What we learned
We have learned a lot about many researchers that have taken the same path with similar viruses. They have achieved success in fighting those viruses. We have learned from them the technique to measure the frequency and the technique to create the frequency to fight it.
What's next for Sterilization Gun
Based on this information we can use the previously recorded frequencies which are effective in killing viruses similar to the COVID-19 virus to predict the frequency which is needed to kill it which is mostly in range kHz. Or we can predict the frequency through building an algorism based on the size and equivalent frequencies of previously recorded viruses. Further studies will be needed to test these frequencies experimentally. We offer an affordable, easy portable user-friendly and programmable mobile application that will help in emitting High-frequency ultrasound waves to destroy the viruses.
