The inspiration for our app is the illiteracy rate in Detroit, our city, the United States and the world. According to the National Institute for Literacy, approximately half of the adult population in Detroit are functionally illiterate, which means that they have trouble reading, writing, and speaking. In fact, the average American can only read at a 7th grade level. Unfortunately, an estimated 785 million adults worldwide are illiterate. These statistics saddened us that not much is being done to reduce that rate and the idea of creating an app that will educate the youth of Detroit and the United States emerged.
Our app is quite simple to use. With a combination of auditory, visual, and motivational features, our app makes a user's experience easy and engaging. A user simply has to click on buttons.
We used an app developer called App Inventor 2 to create Steps to Success
Some challenges we faced include finding the right blocks to code our program, agreeing on certain ideas, resizing pictures to upload on Google Play, and satisfying each team member's expectations for the app. We conquered these challenges by compromising and relentlessness. We listened to everyone's idea and opinion and worked hard to code properly.
Some accomplishments that we're proud is creating the app of course, overcoming the challenges, and ignoring the doubters. One major accomplishment is recording a remix of the alphabet song. It took us over a hundred times to record because we all had to sound decent, come up with a beat, think of catchy phrases, and have no background noise.
As a team we learned more about child and adult literacy and how to work as a team.
With the help of constructive criticism and feedback we plan to make a teen and adult version of the app and increase the difficulty of the app for challenging purposes.
