Inspiration
The mythical story of medusa along with other online platformers such as red ball, level devil and jumping shell.
What it does
Similar to other platformers: get from A to B in least amount of time with the least amount of deaths. But the twist is that there are medusas that petrify you and leave your stone remains. You must go again, your stone selves may be useful...
How we built it
We used Claude to code our ideas quickly, workshopping levels and mechanics on paper beforehand.
Challenges we ran into
It was surprisingly hard to get some sound effects to work and we had to debug it manually. Certain mechanics were quite hard to get exactly as we wanted, for instance the medusa's sight cone is hard to get aesthetic and accurate at the same time. Another issue was medusa's petrifying at each-other, we wanted it to be snappy and also possible for them to petrify each other simultaneously.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are quite proud of some specific levels, our favourites are level 3 with the medusas petrifying each other and level 2 with the shield (it worked exactly how we envisioned it). We also are proud that it feels like it could be an online platformer (with enough polishing)
What we learned
We should have combined work earlier. Claude is quick but not always accurate. Focus on a small number of great levels than a large number of mediocre ones, at least for a proof of concept.
What's next for Stepping Stones
Make more levels, fix cosmetic issues and add more features. Maybe upload it to some game sharing websites. We are contemplating adding a small story element, or trying to make it fit the mythology better.
