Inspiration
Through our research, we found that one in seven people globally struggles with one or more mental health issues. When overwhelmed with stress, anxiety, and more, it is easy to feel a sense of hopelessness and begin to give up on yourself. StepBright aims to make it easier for people in this mindset to overcome their mental health issues, by providing them with a place to start. We realize that having a place to start, is the first step in anyone's road towards recovery, so we are providing them just that.
What it does
StepBright is an app that is designed to help people who struggle with a certain mental health issue to find and start their path towards a healthy and happy mind. Mental health issues make it easy to get bogged down in difficulties and may cause stagnation in efforts to improve. But sometimes, all it takes is a place to start. StepBright has six mental health categories that it focuses on: depression, insomnia, loneliness, stress, anxiety, and addiction. For some of these categories, such as stress, the app implements a research-backed questionnaire meant to quantify the degree of the user’s affliction. Based on the user’s score on this questionnaire, the app provides personalized step-by-step suggestions for the user to follow in order to start on the path to healing. For other categories, such as insomnia, the app provides general tips to deal with the problem along with a “learn more” option for users to explore. We hope that StepBright can serve as an app that not only informs users of some of the most prevalent mental health issues but also sets them on a path to eradicate them.
How I built it
To create the prototype of StepBright, we utilized Figma. Figma is a browser-based UI and UX design application. We used it to design every part of our prototype. We utilized extensions like Font Awesome Icons and UnDraw to make our app look more realistic and clean.
Challenges I ran into
While using Figma, we ran into a few problems with switching screens and pressing buttons. We had to watch several tutorials to get more familiar with the interface. It took us a while to make all the buttons navigate to the correct place. In the beginning, all our screens were scrambled together, but we eventually cleaned it all up and organized all the corresponding screens.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud that we were able to learn how to use Figma and create our first app, with the knowledge we gained that same day. We created a functional prototype that serves as a good reference for what our actual app could look like.
What we learned
We learned how to collaborate and incorporate ideas from all of our group members. We also learned how to utilize creativity to troubleshoot and create something meaningful. We had members from different parts of the world, so we learned to accommodate other people's time zones and schedules.
What's next for StepBright
In the future, StepBright aims to turn this prototype into a downloadable mobile app, accessible to thousands of people. In our mobile version, we would add chatbox features that allow users to input data about themselves and their feelings.
