Inspiration

6th grade is a time of change, the transition between elementary school and middle school is an exciting one. However, for me it wasn't, 6th grade was when I started to struggle with insecurities. Looking back at it, I am shocked that I was able to think so negatively of myself at such a young age. But what's worse is that nowadays, low self-esteem is a normal occurrence for girls as young as the age of 10. Studies show that 7 in 10 girls struggle with feelings of insecurity. This number is also on the rise with exposure to social media, from cyberbullying to xenophobia, Young children who should be enjoying their lives are starting to believe that they are not good enough.

What it does

This small game was made with the goal to be able to empower girls to find and embrace themselves for who they are. "step_by_step" is a fairly short story game that contains a minigame to bring the story forward.

How I built it

I used the coding website, replit.com, and the coding language, p5.js, which I learned a few weeks ago in a Girls Who Code program, to create the game.

Challenges we ran into

The main struggle I had when creating the game was trying to insert the catcher game into my story game. Of course, I also ran into some syntax errors and other errors along the way too.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the game as a whole, I am glad I was able to deliver a short but sweet story of self-discovery with only a few days of work.

What I learned

I learned that all the tedious work of positioning and coding as a whole was all worth it in the end when my final results came out!

What's next for step_by_step

  • more stories: So far "step_by_step" only has one story, so I am hoping to add more stories to increase diversity so that more people will be able to relate to the stories and believe in themselves.
  • increased difficulty: By increasing the difficulty in certain minigames "step_by_step" will be able to make the game more realistic since finding yourself is filled with difficulties and obstacles.
  • more minigames: Since I was low on time and my coding skills are not fully developed, I was not able to add more minigames, but in order to make "step_by_step" more enjoyable and fun to play, adding more variety of games would be a great idea.
