Inspiration
Less than 26.7% of people working in STEM fields are women. It is more important than ever to empower women and give them equal chances and opportunities. This is why we established STEMpower Women. As young women, we wanted to inspire and empower more women to work in STEM fields. We want more young, high school, college women and non-binary students to be inspired while stepping into a predominately male field. Additionally, the important women in STEM who we have linked on our website have inspired us to consider the STEM field!
What it does
STEMpower Women is a solely women and non-binary STEM networking website. It provides access to many resources, jobs, and networking opportunities. It reduces the need to “jump” between platforms, everything is in one spot. We have implemented several features like a Women in Stem section where women can take inspiration from prominent women in STEM, STEM jobs that are open to high school and college students which they can click and apply easily, a discussion forum where women can connect with fellow women and learn from each other, a list of STEM resources which women can refer to learn more about STEM, and a list of career resources that gives more insight about STEM careers to women and helps them work in the STEM fields. Our platform is made by women, for women.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript. We coded it on Replit.com. Our website is user-friendly, mobile-friendly, and computer-friendly.
Challenges we ran into
Coding and developing the chatbox/forum feature was definitely one of the hardest challenges. Our time zones posed a problem as well but our team was super supportive and we persevered and stayed up for late-night meetings with our amazing team!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're extremely proud of working together well as a team to empower women through this amazing website. We're also so proud of the additional coding knowledge that we have learned through this hackathon and would love to thank Superposition for this opportunity!
What we learned
We learned how to work together well and efficiently. We also improved our coding skills and learned more about coding using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. We also learned so much about inspiring women in STEM.
What's next for STEMpower Women
In the future, we hope to add more mentorship, internship, and job opportunities for women in STEM. We hope to further develop our chatbox/forum feature as well.
