When you think of a CS major, you think of a white male. But, there are females who break these stereotypes. Females in STEM should be empowered and uplifted, that is why we built the STEMINISTS.
Inspiration: Women make up only 28% of the workforce in STEM. In college, men vastly outnumber women majoring in most STEM-related fields. Gender gaps are particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid jobs like engineering and computer science. And, with the stereotypes of a white male in the STEM field versus a female, there are many bridges to overcome. To battle this, we need to uplift and empower females in STEM.
What it does: The website helps enables young females to be in charge of themselves in the industry by seeking mentorship and professional help. It is empowering to see people of your background to be in the field, which is why we are creating the STEMINISTS; a website that provides a large variety of resources like mentorship, networking, and advice.
How we built it: We used Google Sites for our main website and then used Python in Spyder to build our matching mentor quiz. We also built a mock up of an app that we could run in Figma.
Challenges we ran into: We had trouble narrowing down our idea because it was a broader topic than expected as there are a lot of issues to solve. We realized that it was impossible to reach a large population in an efficient manner that would fully benefit them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Our biggest accomplishment is learning how to write code for a unique aptitude test in Python. We are also proud of coming into this event with an open mind and collaborating with people we have met for the first time from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. We used our differences to our advantages to create a solution to a problem that we all faced, and problems that other females around the country has faced as well.
What we learned: We learned about different used Figma provides, as we made our app in this website. It was interesting to learn all the different features that it gives. We also learned how many niche sub-problems there are to our overarching problem.
What's next for STEMINISTS: We hope to empower young females in the industry and by doing so, break these stereotypes for other role models to uplift other young girls. In the future, we hope that we can continue this project after gaining more knowledge and see it in fruition.
