Our inspiration

Our inspiration for this project is, first and foremost, our own experiences as women navigating the world of STEM. Being one of the few women in the classroom often left us feeling overwhelmed, isolated, and underrepresented. Not only that, we found that 22-23% of the tech workforce in Southeast Asia are women, despite women making up nearly 50% of the global population. Data also shows that girls lose interest in STEM between ages 12–19. This critical gap became an oppurtunity for us to build a program that empowers and provides a safe space for women to pursue a career in STEM.

Our Solution

Our platform, Stemify, is a AI-powered learning app that empowers young women in Southeast Asia to explore STEM confidently through voice-first navigation, adaptive learning paths, and chatbot guidance. By combining accessibility, personalization, and cultural relevance, Stemify breaks down barriers and makes STEM welcoming, not intimidating.

How we built it

Frontend Our frontend is developed to be seamless and visually appealing, utilizing:

  • React for building responsive and interactive user interfaces.
  • Vite for rapid development and efficient bundling.
  • Shadcn UI to maintain clean, cohesive component styling.
  • TailwindCSS for customizable and modern design aesthetics.

Backend

  • The backend is structured to support real-time responsiveness and intelligent features, powered by:
  • Firebase Firestore for real-time data handling.
  • Google Authentication to ensure secure and streamlined user access.
  • Gemini & Google GenAI to enable natural, AI-driven conversations and assistance.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into while participating in this hackaton includes:

  1. During this hackathon, finding the right balance between brainstorming and execution has been quite a challenge. However, we are able to manage our time efficiently in the end.
  2. Making sure that our solution truly addresses the problem was a challenge in itself. We dont just want to just offer a solution, we want to create something impactful and engaging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to have developed a working prototype that brings together voice recognition, real-time feedback, and Gemini-powered conversations to support STEM learning. Our app doesn't just provide information it guides, encourages, and responds like a thoughtful assistant. One of our biggest achievements is demonstrating how Gemini AI can be used not only as a backend tool, but as a bridge between users and complex topics like STEM, delivered in a way that feels approachable and supportive. Ultimately, we’ve created more than an app we’ve taken a real step toward reducing the barriers that hold learners back.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that building inclusive technology requires more than just functionality it demands empathy. We saw firsthand how AI, when designed thoughtfully, can empower users who are often left behind, such as young women or learners with disabilities. On the technical side, we gained valuable experience integrating Google Gemini AI to power conversational features. We learned how to handle real-time data sync using Firebase Firestore, and how to deliver fluid, voice-based interactions by connecting Gemini’s responses with user intent. The combination of intuitive design and intelligent backend logic helped us understand how AI can make digital learning more human and accessible.

What's next for Stemify

We’re excited about the future of Stemify and where it can go from here. One of our next steps is to expand through meaningful partnerships with organizations that empower women and girls in education and technology. Collaborating with NGOs, schools, and women in STEM communities will allow us to reach more users, provide mentorship opportunities, and amplify our impact. We also plan to enhance the platform with interactive features such as live workshops and mentoring.
