Inspiration
All four of us have younger siblings and cousins; we saw them grow up. They were a big part of our lives and saw how their interests began and waned. Therefore, we had an idea of how their interests could be peaked and lead to a pursuit of passion in STEM. Our idea was we could inspire our siblings and cousins find a pursuit of a topic that would provide them with a future where their creativity can lead to a change they want in the world.
What it does
Our website has the option to select any of the four STEM options in an easy to click box, and there is a search bar that allows for a discovery of learning activities. Once clicked the user will be led to a more detailed view of the STEM option they chose. Then there will be easy to understand material for children to absorb and learn about how they can change the world and find a dream that can last a lifetime.
How we built it
The project was built through the usage of several coding languages(HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Bootstrap) with the major language being HTML. There was a decision to split the portions of the project then commit them as we progress into a collaborative GitHub. Therefore, the project was done so by incorporating a backend and graphics to create a more engaging experience for the user. Additionally, we coded so that there is an easier adaptation for AI in the future development of the website.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major challenges we ran into were the web scraping so that we could incorporate more child friendly search results when they were using our website. Another challenge was the incorporation of an API to our website and the code related to it. Finally, there was an issue with the formatting of the website to be more appealing to the user such as the search bar and color scheme.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The project let us build upon our weaknesses and brought our skills to a greater level. We are proud of creating the project as a whole and working as a team to create a great website within 24 hours. Our current status isn't something that will be our limit but rather improve upon our proud moments to become a greater coder.
What we learned
We learned how to better use many different coding languages and the implementation of API and Bootstrap. However, the learning wasn't just with coding but as people and friends. We went into this project together with the idea of just coding, but we had an experience we won't easily forget of how to be a good teammate and a friend.
What's next for Viva Stemedu
The world is evolving at a rapid pace and the involvement of AI is becoming more and more prevalent. Therefore, our next goal would be to implement AI into our website to create a more friend to friend experience for the users. Additionally, we will be adding more original activities for the children to experience what it could be like in each area of STEM.
