Inspiration

Have you ever wondered how many woman you know link their profession with STEM? According to several researches, nowadays women comprise ONLY 29% of the STEM workface and women make up 3% of STEM industry CEOs. Girls from families with low financial income can not afford fee-paying courses, tutoring or studying in private schools. Knowing that we have created "STEM sisters". Our goal is to inspire young girls to pursue career in STEM by providing them with free high-quality lessons. We started this project to provide support for young women and make our contribution to the fight against gender gap between women and men in STEM.

What it does

STEM Sisters created an online platform that helps to connect representatives of the new generation who are ready to learn and share their knowledge with each other. There are 5 main pages on our website: home, mentors, students, wistem. To learn more you can check our prototype.

What we provide

1) Girls from 10 to 17 years old can receive free online classes to acquire skills in STEM field with top-class teachers. 2) Whether they are interested in science, programming, mathematics or engineering, they will always find an inspiring mentor with us. 3) Using convenient online platform, we quickly connect students and teachers, providing both sides with a flexible schedule.

How we built it

We used Figma and CSS to design our website. Also we made prorotype in Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Hackathons are always challenging, nevertheless they are lots of fun. We worked in Figma many times before, but it was the first time we used “prototype” and “animation” functions. We tried to make UI and UX as comfortable as possible, colors that we used are not too bright or too pale. We also asked our family and friends to try it out, so we could apply changes, based on their opinion and personal advice.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud to call ourselves WOMEN IN STEM! After tons of research on that topic we understood how serious that problem is in society. Breaking stereotypes (like STEM is not for girls) are always empowering, they give us strength to keep working on our project.

What we learned

It’s well-known that making a project in 72 hours is not easy, however we are proud of ourselves as a team. We learned how to split work, manage our time and work fast. The most important lesson that we were taught during TecHacks 2.0 is supporting each other and BE a team, sometimes it can be very hard and that is precisely why it is so important.

What's next for STEM Sisters

We will expand to recruit mentors of different ages from high school students to women, with a long work experience and maybe someday we will may become an international organisation working with women all over the world.
