STEM disciplines encompass many different ways of thinking as well as career paths. The STEM Pocket Project helps young students, especially women who are unsure about their place in STEM figure out a designated STEM sector based on their interests. This includes a list of opportunities and resources these students can sign up for based on individual algorithms results.
The reason that we decided to create this project was because one of the team member's experiences with micro-aggression. She had once been told that it was unlikely for her to be successful with her name within technology and engineering. This had seriously discouraged her until her 6th grade science teacher had told her about the gender gap in STEM. She had decided to do research and realized that there were so many opportunities for her to go into STEM programs. In this way, she had felt more motivated to seek opportunities in STEM. Thus, this topic allows us to also encourage and give help to those who feel discouraged to have a segway into STEM.
