STEM-Hub

Inspiration

STEM-Hub was inspired by the challenge of making STEM education more accessible, engaging, and interactive for students. We recognized that many students struggle with STEM concepts because they are often presented in static, abstract ways. Our goal was to create a platform that simplifies complex ideas, encourages exploration, and makes learning STEM fun and exciting through hands-on activities and simulations.

What it does

STEM-Hub is a modular platform designed to enhance STEM education through interactive tools and games. It features several modules:

  • STEM Explorer: Visualize and experiment with physics and math concepts.
  • Build-A-Bridge: Design and test bridges with real-time physics simulations.
  • BioBuilder: Gamify the exploration of human anatomy.
  • EcoMath: Solve environmental problems while learning math concepts.
  • CodeLab: Conduct virtual STEM experiments.
  • STEMMap: Create and visualize datasets interactively.

The platform gamifies learning with badges, leaderboards, and challenges, making STEM topics engaging and rewarding.

How we built it

  • Frontend:
We used Next.js for its modular architecture and server-side rendering, ensuring a smooth user experience.
Tailwind CSS powered our responsive and visually appealing UI design.

  • Backend:
Firebase provided authentication and a real-time database for storing user progress, badges, and data visualization content.

  • Libraries and Tools:

    • Matter.js for physics simulations in modules like Build-A-Bridge.
    • D3.js for creating interactive data visualizations in STEMMap.
    • Figma for designing wireframes and user interfaces.
  • Deployment:
STEM-Hub was deployed on Vercel, ensuring a fast and scalable platform.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Time Constraints:
Developing multiple modules within the hackathon timeframe required careful prioritization and focus.

  2. Cross-Module Consistency:
Maintaining a uniform design and user experience across diverse modules was a significant challenge.

  3. Complex Simulations:
Implementing accurate, real-time physics and data visualization required thorough testing and refinement.
