About the project

STEM is a Flutter-based mobile app designed to foster a vibrant and supportive community for women pursuing careers in STEM fields. It's more than just an app; it's a platform for learning, growth, and connection, all while promoting gender equality in the tech world.

Inspiration

The seed for STEM was planted during brainstorming sessions with Gemini AI for the Google Women Techmakers She Builds AI hackathon. These discussions highlighted the urgent need to address the gender gap in STEM fields, a key challenge outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 for gender equality. Discovering a beautiful lavender-themed design on Dribbble solidified the vision for an app that would not only provide valuable resources but also create an aesthetically pleasing and calming environment for women pursuing STEM careers.

What it does

STEM empowers women to thrive in the world of STEM through a comprehensive and engaging mobile experience. It provides:

Access to Knowledge: Explore a curated collection of free STEM courses, learn about influential women in the field, and discover fascinating mathematical facts. Personalized Support: Connect with AI-powered mentors and coaches for guidance and support on your STEM journey. Career Development Tools: Utilize the CV and cover letter generators to create compelling job applications and identify your ideal STEM career path with the interactive quiz. Well-being Resources: Relax and recharge with a curated selection of calming music, promoting focus and a balanced lifestyle. Ultimately, STEM aims to create a supportive community where women can learn, grow, and connect while contributing to a more inclusive and equitable tech world.

How we built it

Developing STEM was a journey of learning and discovery, but also one marked by unexpected challenges. Initially, I was excited to lead a team, but unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I found myself working solo just one week before the deadline. Despite this setback, I was determined to make progress. I immersed myself in the project, finding design inspiration on Dribbble, and leveraging Gemini AI as my coding partner and sounding board for ideas and solutions.

Challenges we ran into

This project presented a unique set of challenges. Beyond the typical learning curve of a new project, I had to overcome the hurdle of losing my entire team and the pressure of a rapidly approaching deadline. Additionally, I encountered persistent laptop issues that hampered my progress, particularly with the back-end development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite these obstacles, I'm proud of what I've accomplished. I successfully implemented several core features of the app. This experience has reinforced the importance of adaptability, resourcefulness, and the power of AI assistance in software development.

What we learned

This experience has been an invaluable lesson in perseverance, problem-solving, and the power of human-AI collaboration. It has also solidified my commitment to supporting women in STEM and fostering a more inclusive tech community.

This is just the beginning for STEM. I'm committed to continuing development with my coding partner, Gemini AI. My immediate focus is on completing the back-end functionality and implementing the remaining features. I believe STEM has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of women pursuing STEM careers, and I'm excited to see it grow and evolve.
