Inspiration
Stelloom was inspired by our own use of photo apps and social media. Looking back at the images we have taken and shared, we realized how often people capture beautiful moments, like the night sky, but rarely revisit them. Small but meaningful experiences get buried in endless gallery scrolls. It reflects how effortless it has become to document and share, to the point that people forget the moments they capture.
What it does
Stelloom is an evolving journaling experience where users turn daily moments into stars, connect them into constellations, and share them with others. Messages travel as shooting stars with real-time delays, and diary content from other users reveals itself gradually over time. The interface transforms with use, as stars and constellations are continuously added and gradually disappear over time. The app creates a personal night sky where memories, interactions, and stories gain meaning over time through anticipation and visual evolution. Overall, Stelloom focuses on bringing an intentional pause and reflective meaning back to the small moments we tend to capture and forget nowadays.
How we built it
We used Figma Make to bring Stelloom to life as an interactive prototype. Our team began by brainstorming ideas, defining our main concept, and developing visual directions such as color palettes, UI components, and a design system. We then translated our final idea into detailed, structured prompts to put into Figma Make. We went through endless sessions of rapid prototyping and iterations to evolve the screens into interactive and animated prototypes.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was ensuring that Stelloom truly responded to the prompt while remaining meaningful as an app. It was also difficult to design intentional friction in a digital space that typically prioritizes eliminating it. Additionally, working with Figma Make required continuous experimentation and clear communication to create the screens, interactions, and animated effects we desired.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are especially proud of how we translated an abstract concept into tangible interactions. Specifically, we are proud of how we were able to make the Camera feature both interactive and animated through Figma Make. Users can draw their own star and connect stars to create a personalized constellation. Also, we are proud of the cohesive and immersive UI, which successfully reinforces the emotional and conceptual goals of the Stelloom.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how digital experiences have made our lives frictionless, causing us to overlook small pauses and forget spending moments of reflection. We were once again reminded of the cost of convenience and how the art of waiting is losing its value.
What's next for Stelloom
Next, we plan to further refine the UI and expand the range of interactions within the app. This includes developing more ways for users to explore each other’s archives and night skies, and allowing users to visually see the captured moments and journal entries fading away. We also hope to make this app not only connect strangers but also reach nearby friends and family members in order to emphasize the importance of those closest to us.
