Inspiration

Culture is defined by the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. It builds communities and forms identities. Each country has different practices, different traditions, and learning about other cultures enables us to better understand each other and expand our worldview.

That’s why we created Stellearn—we wanted to learn more about other traditions and bridge cultural differences.

What it does

Stellearn aims to foster learning and build bridges between different cultures. Each culture is represented by unique interactive planets, and the user is led through a learning journey by the charming NPC Gary. By completing tasks and getting achievements, such as completing a quiz or playing a fun activity or game, the bridge to the next planet is built, where the ever-changing immersive experience continues. In this way, we can explore multitudes of different cultures while literally building bridges and keeping the user engaged.

How we built it

We used Figma to organize and prototype the app, and each team member played a role in creating the graphic elements of stellearn.

Challenges we ran into

From the beginning, we had difficulty communicating due to such a drastic difference in time zones, being 15 hours apart. We also had to be flexible and adjust our plans for the app due to time constraints and the possibility of taking on more than we could handle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Throughout these past 24 hours, we have overcome many challenges and ultimately designed an app that we’re proud of. Although it was a slightly grueling process, we managed to incorporate our own graphics throughout the game, achieving originality in our visuals and implementations. Moreover, we were able to include activities and aspects that the user could interact with and learn from.

What we learned

From this project, we learned to effectively manage our time and adjust our plans in order to complete our app and still achieve a great final product. In addition, we got to develop our skills in app designing and utilizing Figma and managed to work well as a team despite the challenges we faced.

What's next for stellearn

Going forward, we hope to continue creating content and designing fun activities for countries and cultures that may not be as familiar to the general public. We also plan to implement features that allow the user to send us feedback for stellearn or content they would like to see added. Either way, this is just the beginning for stellearn and we’re excited to continue working with it!
