Inspiration

The amount of academic papers out there makes it extremely difficult for researchers, students, and entrepreneurs, to identify foundational texts. We found a way to make the searching aspect and the discovery of it all in a fun and intuitive way making the entire process enjoyable for all in need of academic or published publications!

What it does

What Stellar Papers does is that takes a dataset of over 200,000 papers and forms an astounding visualization tool to help students see the relations between the papers in a directed graph! You are able to see the separation of authors, fields, and different fields of sciences that these papers may cover. Making it easier to digest and figure out papers that they are in need of!

How we built it

We built Stellar Papers using Next.js which we used as our overall web framework with React as our frontend, RESTful API's, a serverless hosted Neo4j Database, NextAuth.js, a serverless mongoDB for independent user accounts, Open Alex API, and an AI agent using Google Gemini to help analyze and break down selected papers!

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges that we ran into was acquiring an efficient way to represent our data that was not only meaningful but academically proven to be of benefit. Another challenge we faced was the overall idea of parsing the data and extracting the important bits that would be linked to our visualization tool via the Open Alex API. Lastly, another challenge we had to overcome was storing the large dataset in a efficient database that was easily accessible not only by our team members but our shared work overall when it came to the making of Stellar Papers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The accomplishments that we are proud of was having the ability to work as a group and collaborating close in hand with one another, exploring the tech stack and learning as much as possible about it, and bringing our idea to life and something that can be positively impactful to individuals in need of a good research paper source!

What we learned

We learned that full stack projects are really exciting to work with, the ability to use different technology across the tech spectrum was really eye opening and gave us the ability to learn by doing, which we can all confidently walk away knowing we contributed to something meaningful while having gained new knowledge that we can carry forward in our professional careers.

What's next for Stellar Papers

The next step for Stellar Papers is to obtain and build out our dataset / database to hold much more information that will only excel in helping those in need. We also want to reinforce Stellar Papers to be more efficient when ran on the web, improving our code base, and making it the best it could be so that others can enjoy!
