Inspiration
Our inspiration for Stega Guardians came from several statistics, the most alarming of which was that in 2023, $10 billion was lost to scammers. This mind-blowing number, coupled with personal experiences of our friends encountering scammers, made us think about the need for a solution educating and protecting the next generation of internet users.
What it does
Stega Guardians is a scam prevention site specifically designed for kids. It educates young netizens about common online scams through interactive content, games, and quizzes. The site also provides specific types of scams that kids commonly encounter, like NSFW scams and gaming scams.
How I built it
We built Stega Guardians using Node.js for the backend, Express for handling server-side logic, and Tailwind CSS for styling the frontend. Our team multitasked to integrate educational content seamlessly with interactive games and quizzes.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was making complex scam prevention concepts accessible and engaging for children. Balancing educational content with interactive and fun elements required planning and multiple iterations. Additionally, we overcame significant logistical issues, such as losing files to permanent deletion.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are particularly proud of creating a platform that has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of young internet users. Our user-friendly design and interactive learning modules received positive feedback during testing, where we shared our solution with friends and family. Additionally, we created an entire Roblox game for our gaming scams unit, something that we are really proud of as we explored many new concepts in Roblox Studio.
What I learned
Throughout this project, we learned the importance of centering our design around users. Also, we gained experience in using Node.js and Express for building applications and learned about Tailwind CSS for responsive but aesthetically pleasing design. And lastly, we learned how to create a solution that was easily expandable in the future!
What's next for Stega Guardians
The next steps for Stega Guardians include expanding our content library to cover more types of scams and cybersecurity concepts, as well as adding even more interactive and fun features. We would also want to collaborate with schools and educational organizations to integrate Stega Guardians into their computer literacy programs.
