Using Blockchain and Computer Vision to reduce daily consumer food waste

Inspiration

Personal experience as a university student, not being able to keep track of our groceries bought and when they expire caused a lot of food & money waste since they went bad before being used. We wanted a seamless app that helps individuals and families know what they have in their fridge, meal inspiration based on food that has the shortest shelf-life remaining, and an integration to purchase items (stored in memory of previously purchased) only when we've run out in our fridge (prevent over-buying).

What it does

The app allows users to take a photo of their receipt or items purchased and sends this information to "their fridge" database. Each item is linked to it's shelf life time, and is displayed with an easy to read "days left" icon. Green means the product will last for 7+ days, orange means there are 3-7 days left, and red means the food is going bad soon in <3 days. The recipes tab creates meals based off of items that will soon expire in your fridge. The addition "buy" function allows the user to buy items they ran out of, or need for a specific recipe.

How we built it

Our whole tech stack includes AI, cloud computing and blockchain technology. For backend, we used Google Cloud serverless services like cloud function and MongoDB to support the features that users do not usually use. Also we implement a server with a GCP compute engine to call Google Vision API. Besides, we store images to Firebase database for Google Vision API. We also used Algorand blockchain as a payment method. For frontend, we used React Native to build the Mobile App.

Challenges we ran into

  • hard to debug when we are very tired.
  • implement blockchain in a Cloud compute engine.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • creating a functional app using blockchain, AI, and computer vision in the short time frame ( took us 6 hours to decide on an idea, so we were very crunched for time)

What we learned

You won't be able to change the world, so start local and think about what differences you want to make in your life. Then think big and with a strong foundation you can apply it to the world ( and incorporate interesting technologies).

What's next for StayFresh

Stay Fresh will be partnering with local and national grocery chains ( including Amazon Whole Foods delivery) to optimize the grocery delivery process.
