Inspiration

As a student there is usually a lot of studying to be done but sometimes you just cannot make any progress because of all the distractions. The smartphone is one of them, actually one of the major culprits if not the biggest. This is the moment when an app like 'Forest:Stay Focused' helped me and my fellow students to get the work done by rewarding us with the planting of real trees if we ignore the phone for long enough. It is truly amazing how you can encourage people to act for the common good by rewarding the common good. That is why we wanted to use this concept for Stay4Tree.

What it does

Stay4Tree saves people. Even the ones who do not use it. As long as you are connected to your home WiFi a small virtual tree can be planted on your phone. Personalize it by naming it and choosing its color. If you stay at home for long enough you can harvest it and plant a new one. Once you have enough virtual trees you can plant a real tree as part of environment protection initiatives.

Challenges I ran into

Since we are pretty much new to Android development there were quite a lot difficulties we had to figure out.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

It is / will be the first Android app we built. It is not an accomplishment yet but we hope that Stay4Tree will help people to stay healthy in times like this. Also more trees should make the earth a bit more livable.

What I learned

What my phone actually does while I'm scrolling through Twitter, news, etc. half asleep on the train every morning.
