We want students to know what's going on with the police on their campuses and make data related to police incidents easily accessible so we are bringing together three different technologies to make this happen. (Alexa, Twitter, and Web)
What it does
We use the daily logs published by the UVA police to create a dashboard that is all dynamic and students can interact with to understand what's happening around them. If you have an Alexa, you can use that to get information too. We have also designed a bot that will tweet out the incidents from the previous day on a daily basis.
How we built it
We scraped the data from the UVA Police Departments' website, which was not in a format that was easy to understand, cleaned the data, made visualizations of that data, and interpreted it in a way that would be very useful and easy for students to understand.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the technologies we used like the Twitter Bot and Alexa Skills were completely unfamiliar to us before we started this project so learn those technologies from scratch and integrate them within the project in a short period of time is something we are very proud of.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of the fact that not only did we idealize the project but also were also able to make a working demo using all the data we scraped to create something that would be very useful for the students of UVA.
What we learned
Not only did we learn so many new technologies that we were not aware of but we also got the chance to learn how to work as a team and understand each other to make the best possible project.
