Inspiration 💡
The idea for StayLocal was inspired by the struggle faced by students, workers, and newcomers in small towns who often spend days searching for rooms or houses to rent. Meanwhile, many local property owners have vacant spaces but lack digital awareness to list them online. This disconnect motivated us to create a simple, data-driven, hyperlocal platform that empowers both renters and owners — bridging the digital gap in the local housing ecosystem.
What We Learned 📘
Through this project, we learned: How digital platforms can transform local communities by solving real-world accessibility problems. Practical implementation of frontend–backend integration using Flask/Django. Basics of data visualization and analytics using Chart.js and Power BI. The importance of UI/UX design for non-technical users in rural and semi-urban areas. Team collaboration, version control with GitHub, and project deployment strategies.
How We Built It 🛠️
Designed a simple and mobile-friendly frontend using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Developed a backend system in Python (Flask) to handle user registration, property listings, and search queries. Integrated a SQLite/MySQL database to store property and user data securely. Used Google Maps API for displaying property locations. Added data analytics dashboards to show trends like availability ratios and rental demand using Chart.js. Deployed the prototype using Render and managed the codebase on GitHub.
Challenges We Faced ⚙️
Collecting accurate local data for testing and demonstration. Ensuring the platform runs smoothly on low-end devices with limited internet speed. Learning and integrating APIs and databases for the first time. Designing an intuitive interface for users with minimal technical literacy. Managing time and responsibilities within the team while learning new tools.
Key Takeaway ✨
Our biggest takeaway was realizing that even simple tech solutions can create a huge local impact when focused on inclusivity, accessibility, and real community needs. Mathematically speaking, the value of our idea grows exponentially with awareness:
