Inspiration

In light of all the recent crimes happening around campus, we wanted to create a tool that would help our students stay safe and conscious of their surroundings.

What it does

Our mobile app, Stay Alert, maps areas of the UVA campus where crime has occurred recently (past week, month, or 3 months). Data is updated in real time based on the UVA campus police crime logs.

How we built it

Our database consists of the crime logs posted on https://uvapolice.virginia.edu, which we scraped with selenium for python. We used the Google maps API

Challenges we ran into

We had some difficulties cleaning the raw data we scraped from https://uvapolice.virginia.edu, due to inconsistencies in the formatting. Another obstacle we faced was uploading and retrieving data from firebase, as well as implementing our real time update feature.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a working prototype.

What we learned

Data parsing/cleaning can be difficult and time consuming to manage.

What's next for Stay Alert

We're planning to expand to college campuses across the US!
