Inspiration
Surprised about election results? So were we. This election brought to light vast disparities in different parts of America. With uneven development occurring across the country, we have lost touch with what "other" parts of America are like. State of the States aims to show you what your life would be like if you grew up elsewhere. How would your income change? Access to women's healthcare? What about pregnancy rates? We aim to build empathy across the partisan divide, while providing links to charities where our users can donate to causes they learn about through us.
What it does
Enter your demographic information and choose a state to compare. We generate easy-to-read graphs of a diverse array of relevant statistics.
How we built it
Python flask app/site(html) , graphs utilize Plotly, designed in Illustrator
Challenges we ran into
Pacing ourselves at our first Hackathon, learning Flask and its intricacies, cleaning large amounts of data quickly, managing a team that could play to our strengths given that half of us have only taken a single intro CS course.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since this is the first Hackathon for all four members of our all-women team, we're really proud to have completed a project we're proud of!
What we learned
How to build and host a Flask app, how to optimize Plotly, HTML, data cleaning via scripts we wrote, how to optimize our time
What's next for State of the States
Expanding the usage of the demographic info we collect, further arranging/curating statistics in meaningful and impactful ways, further tying our content in to current events, adding additional information in statistic descriptions, building up our charities section
