Inspiration

Housing application and allotment processes can involve lengthy paperwork, unclear status updates, and difficulty tracking waitlist positions. We wanted to create a simple digital platform that makes the housing application process more transparent, organized, and accessible for citizens.

What it does

The State Housing Board Allotment Portal allows citizens to register, view available housing schemes, submit housing applications, upload required documents, and track their application status.

The portal also provides waitlist position tracking so applicants can understand their current status. Housing Board administrators can verify applications, manage housing schemes, approve or reject applications, manage available houses, and handle allotments.

How we built it

We built the project using the MERN stack:

  • MongoDB for storing users, applications, housing schemes, documents, houses, and waitlist information.
  • Express.js and Node.js for developing the backend APIs and application logic.
  • React.js for creating the responsive and interactive frontend.
  • JWT authentication for secure user login and role-based access.
  • Mongoose for managing MongoDB data models.
  • Git and GitHub for team collaboration and version control.

The system is designed with separate modules for citizens and administrators.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was designing a clear application workflow from application submission to document verification, approval, waitlisting, and final house allotment.

Managing different user roles and ensuring that users can access only the features relevant to them was another challenge. We also had to design the database relationships between users, applications, housing schemes, houses, and waitlists.

Team collaboration and maintaining consistent code through Git branches and GitHub were also important challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating an end-to-end digital workflow for housing applications and allotment management.

The project brings application submission, document verification, application tracking, waitlist management, and house allotment into a single platform. It also provides administrators with centralized tools to manage applications and housing schemes.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to develop a full-stack web application using the MERN stack.

We gained practical experience in REST APIs, MongoDB database design, authentication, role-based access control, file uploads, React components, and Git-based team collaboration.

We also learned how to divide a large project into independent modules and integrate them into a single application.

What's next for State Housing Board Allotment Portal

In the future, we plan to add real-time notifications, email and SMS alerts, online payment integration, downloadable allotment letters, advanced reporting dashboards, improved document verification, and analytics for housing demand and waitlist trends.

Our goal is to make the platform more transparent, efficient, and user-friendly for both citizens and Housing Board administrators.
