Inspiration
After reading all of the different challenges, the State Farm one stood out to us as something unique and different. The challenge wanted us to create a program that rewards positive customer behaviors with some sort of discount on home insurance, comparable to what State Farm does with their auto insurance: “Drive Safe and Save”. Our team felt that this concept of rewarding home owners who try and improve their home with savings was a great idea, so we started to create what that would look like.
What it does
The program is a website that is meant to be used by both the customer getting the housework done, and the contractor that worked on the house. For the customer, it would display their house quality status and links to different contractors for potential works that they could do. For the contractor, it would show what jobs are available for them to work on and if they are complete or not.
How we built it
The main languages that were used were HTML, CSS, and some JavaScript to create the website and the functionality.
Challenges we ran into
Initially the project would be much more ambitious and be able to have the user login and be able to submit work requests that the contractors would see, but due to time constraints, our team decided to not focus on the login process, and more focus on what the user would see.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team had very little experience with hackathons or the languages that were used to create this, so actually creating a rough outline of the project and what we envisioned it to look like is something that we are happy about.
What we learned
From this project, we learned about some of the coding languages that are commonly used to make websites and how to collaborate on a programming project using GitHub.
What's next for State Farm Strong Homes
The work that we have right now is just a rough outline of what could be a great way to incentivize homeowners to maintain and improve their home. If we were to continue to work on this project, we would try to implement the login features and the other functionalities like submitting a work request that had to be cut due to time constraints.
