Inspiration

We were inspired by the possibility of saving peoples financial situation when a natural calamity occurs. There are many tornado and hurricane prone areas in the United States. These areas are often left in a trail of damage and destruction. The people of these areas often need some sort of assurance for their homes and property. The flood insurance policy is one such form of assurance. With this policy, people can rest assured that they will be taken care of in the even of a flood. We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to bring awareness on this insurance. We would like to extend hearty thanks to HackUTA and State Farm for this opportunity.

What it does

Let people know if they are in a flood prone area and inform them about State Farm's flood insurance policy.

How we built it

For front end we used Velo by WIX to design the website and for back end we used JAVA script to program the functionality of accepting the input city from the user and retrieving the current weather conditions from Accuweather via the Accuweather API.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to use alerts for flood warning but, due to the nature of our financial constrains, and the limited services offered pro bono, we could not implement this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It's the first Hackathon for all the team members and we managed to finish our project in time.

What we learned

  • Teamwork makes stuff easier.
  • We learned Velo by Wix, something none of us have dabbled in before.
  • We learned how to make UI/UX better.
  • We learned different types of JS libraries.
  • We learned a lot of new approaches, especially by attending the different workshops hosted at the event.
  • But most of all, we made new friends along the way.

What's next for State Farm Flood Insurance

  • Flood Insurance is not something a lot of people know about. So, when someone enters their location on our website, it is going to let them know if they are in flood prone region and then it will let them know about the State Farm's flood insurance policy.
  • We would like to further improve our service and add more features for future updates. We don't have a solid agenda on this yet, but surely we can come up with it in due time.
