Inspiration
As an entrepreneur in the Western startup scene, I saw how hard it was to find the right co-founder or investor—no single hub existed to streamline these connections. I wanted to build something that removed friction, letting founders focus on building instead of searching.
What it does
Startup Mixer is a networking platform for early-stage founders, investors, and advisors. It lets users browse curated founder profiles, get tailored co-founder matches, explore investor networks, discover startup events, and engage with a peer Q&A community—all accessible without logging in.
How we built it
We started with mapping core user needs (e.g., industry/location filtering, compatibility matching). Using React for the frontend, we built responsive card-based layouts; Node.js/Express powered backend logic, with MongoDB storing profile/event data. AWS hosted the platform, and Figma guided the clean, industry-aligned UI design.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing simplicity (no login) with robust filtering was tough—we had to ensure filters were intuitive but powerful enough to surface relevant matches/events. Also, designing compatibility scoring for co-founder matches required iterating to make alignment indicators clear and actionable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a seamless, login-free experience that still delivers personalized value; building a filter system that works across profiles, investors, and events; and crafting a UI that feels native to the Western startup ecosystem’s professional tone.
What we learned
We learned the importance of prioritizing user flow over feature bloat—founders need quick access to key info, not clunky navigation. We also gained insight into monetization balance: free access to core features builds trust, while premium perks (direct messaging) drive value.
What's next for this project
We plan to add mobile optimization for on-the-go access, expand investor event exclusives for premium users, and refine the co-founder matching logic to include skill gap analytics. We’re also exploring partnerships with startup hubs to feature real, local events.
