Startup copilot Africa

Inspiration

Starting a business can be difficult, especially when you have an idea but don't know where to start. Many young entrepreneurs have good ideas but struggle with understanding their market, building a business plan, defining their customers, and deciding what to do next.

This is what inspired us to build Startup Copilot Africa.

We wanted to create a simple platform that could help someone take a business idea and gradually turn it into something more structured and realistic.

About the project

Startup Copilot Africa is a platform that helps entrepreneurs develop their business ideas.

The user starts by explaining their idea through a guided interview. The platform then uses the information provided to help structure the idea, generate a business plan, identify important areas to work on, and provide guidance through the AI copilot.

The main goal is to make the first steps of entrepreneurship easier and more accessible.

How we built it

We built the application as a web platform using Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Supabase, PostgreSQL, and the OpenAI API.

We focused on creating a simple user experience where the entrepreneur can explain their idea instead of having to understand complicated business terminology from the beginning.

The information collected from the user is stored and used to generate the different parts of their business project.

What we learned

One of the biggest things we learned was that building an AI application is not just about connecting an API to a website.

We had to think about how to ask the right questions, how to structure the information received from users, and how to make the generated results actually useful.

We also learned a lot about connecting the frontend, backend, database, and AI services into one working application.

Challenges

One of our main challenges was deciding what features were really necessary for the first version of the product.

We also faced technical challenges with database integration, AI-generated data, TypeScript, deployment, and connecting the different parts of the application.

Another challenge was making the project relevant to African entrepreneurs instead of creating a generic startup tool.

What's next

The next step is to test Startup Copilot Africa with more people who are actually trying to start businesses.

We want to use their feedback to improve the questions, recommendations, and business plans generated by the platform.

Our long-term goal is to make Startup Copilot Africa a practical tool that helps more African entrepreneurs move from having an idea to building a real business.
