Startonomics — Visualizing the Startup Pulse of Asia

Inspiration

Asia is home to some of the fastest-growing startup ecosystems in the world, yet most information about startups exists as scattered data points — funding numbers, news articles, and static reports that lack context and storytelling. As engineering students passionate about technology, data, and economics, we wanted to answer a simple but powerful question: How do startups actually impact economic growth, employment, and innovation across Asia? We were inspired by the idea of transforming raw startup data into interactive stories that students, researchers, and aspiring entrepreneurs can easily explore and understand.

What it does

Startonomics is a visual analytics platform that showcases how startups across Asia contribute to innovation and economic development.

The platform allows users to:

Explore startups country-wise and sector-wise
View detailed startup profiles with: Mission & vision, Founder information, Funding growth trends and Economic & social impact metrics
Visualize funding growth using interactive charts
Understand startup milestones through a storytelling format

How we built it

We built Startonomics as a modern single-page web application using a clean and scalable frontend architecture.

Architecture Flow:

Startup data is stored in structured JSON format
React components dynamically render startup cards and detail pages
Chart libraries visualize funding and impact growth
Animations and transitions enhance storytelling and user experience
The project is deployed as a production-ready web app

We focused heavily on clarity, performance, and storytelling rather than overwhelming users with excessive data.

Challenges we ran into

Data organization: Structuring startup data uniformly across countries and sectors was challenging.
Asset handling: Managing static assets and image paths for production builds required careful optimization.
Visualization balance: We had to ensure charts added insight, not confusion.
Deployment issues: Resolving build errors during deployment helped us understand real-world production workflows.
