🌟 1. INSPIRATION

Starry Townlet was inspired by real connection: my husband and I actually met in VR while building digital worlds. We wanted to recreate that feeling of joy and shared experience by crafting a warm, welcoming space where people can laugh, bond, and play together.

Our mission? To build a world focused on fun, connection, and casual party games — something that feels both handcrafted and social at its core.

🎲 2. WHAT IT DOES

Starry Townlet is a vibrant village filled with a variety of quick-play, multiplayer games designed for shared fun and repeat visits.

🔄 Core Gameplay & Interactivity Multiple party-style Trivia Boards (e.g. music, movies, fun facts) designed for casual groups or date nights

Timed Treasure Hunt with a leader-board for competitive replays

User driven Hide n Seek now with the ability to hide inside buildings

Quest board that lets players choose their next activity

Magic Galleon Ride with clear useage instructions and shortened sail to allow clearer views when flying

Lost and Found mini-game with reactive game logic

Find the "Surprise Easter Egg" to unlock a unique, selfie-worthy shareable moment! 🌟JUST SO THE JUDGES CAN FIND THE SHAREABLE MOMENT 🌟 - find the house behind the Windmill on the highest hill next to the campfire and enter the green front door, grab the key, enjoy your shareable moment!)

The experience is loop-based: most activities are designed to be fun within 2–5 minutes, while still rewarding repeat exploration.

🛠️ 3. HOW WE BUILT IT

We’re a 2-person team. I created the concept, visuals, and every single mesh, while my husband brought baked the textures and imported the models.

🔧 Technical

All models, textures, and meshes are 100% original and handmade using:

Blender (modeling)

Substance Painter (texturing)

Photoshop (additional detailing)

Assets are low-poly and performance-optimized, designed specifically for Horizon Worlds.

🎮 Functionality & Features

Interactive logic, timer systems, score tracking, and Easter egg trigger

Integrated leader-boards, music, ambient sound, particle effects, and fog

Custom UI elements and game instructions make the world feel polished and intuitive

Every system is built with performance and reliability across devices in mind.

🚧 4. CHALLENGES WE RAN INTO

Time Constraints: Every mesh and texture was created from scratch — which took longer, but ensured a unique style.

Normal Mapping Limitations in Horizon led us to develop our own workaround using creative shading and hand-painted effects.

As a team of two, we had to juggle visual design, logic coding, and gameplay scripting ourselves, which made collaboration, communication, and time management key.

🏆 5. ACCOMPLISHMENTS WE'RE PROUD OF

The amount of updates since we started.

  1. Lots of new game boards have been added, with Trivia for all ages (eg music, movies, fun facts)
  2. We now have a timed coin hunt (with better effects) linking to a leaderboard, to encourage people to return to beat their score.
  3. We have created a Hide n Seek game and made it so you can hide inside the buildings.
  4. You now have a choice of Quests to enjoy!
  5. The Magic Galleon now has flight instructions and a raised sail for better views.
  6. There’s a lost and found game where the hiding place updates.
  7. 7 Selfie Spots where you can share your photos to Instagram and tag us
  8. and a really exciting Easter-Egg.. if found you get a shareable moment like no other!

✨ Visual & Technical Craftsmanship Every mesh is hand-modeled and low poly — no pre-made assets

Developed a custom texturing technique to simulate normal maps, adding fake depth and light behavior to surfaces

Built multiple game systems, UI, and animations without external help

💑 Real-World Connection This is our second full Horizon world, made entirely as a couple — a personal and creative milestone

We’ve seen people genuinely excited about visiting the world due to it's rich visuals.

📚 6. WHAT WE LEARNED

We gained deep skills in:

Optimizing VR assets for performance without sacrificing style

Creating immersive, re-playable game loops (especially for Trivia and Treasure Hunt systems)

Faking normal mapping using only textures and light to add perceived depth

Designing for social interaction and player-led exploration in VR spaces

Leveraging Horizon’s UI and sound tools to make a cohesive, responsive experience

We also learned that players love secrets, shared moments, and anything that encourages them to bring a friend.

🚀 7. WHAT'S NEXT FOR "STARRY TOWNLET"

🎲 Expanded Gameplay More game overlays (e.g. Never Have I Ever, Ludo, etc.)

Player customization options (themed tokens, dice, board styles)

Mini avatar upgrades and interaction props

💰 IWP & Monetization Launch IWP purchases for aesthetic items like bespoke dice, special game boards, and accessories

Use our avatar fashion background to add wearable items and fun collectibles

🛕 New Areas in Development Building the interior of the village church, potentially for special community events like weddings or celebrations

More secret zones and hidden games to deepen long-term engagement

🤝 Open to Collaboration We’d love to collaborate with a Horizon coder or game designer to expand the depth and complexity of our world systems — and maybe even create a whole new adventure next!
