Inspiration Starrunner was born from the realization that both running and mental health journeys are inherently solitary yet profoundly communal. My experience in student leadership at UJ showed me that when we combine the rhythmic, meditative nature of running with structured support systems, we can bridge the "skills gap" between personal healing and future professional readiness. Starrunner isn't just about finish times; it’s about ensuring that every student has the mental clarity and community support to cross their own personal finish lines.

What it does Starrunner is a hybrid wellness and development platform. It uses a "Run-to-Heal" model, where guided, low-pressure running sessions act as the vehicle for mental health awareness. After each run, participants transition into "Pathways Workshops" that address food security, technical skill-building, and peer mentorship, creating a holistic ecosystem where physical endurance builds the resilience needed to tackle academic and life challenges.

How we built it We utilized a modern, agile tech stack to keep the project lightweight and accessible. We built the core platform using Next.js for a responsive frontend, Supabase for handling user data and session scheduling, and Python-based analytics to track participant progress in both their fitness and workshop engagement. The design philosophy centered on "Minimalism for Focus"—keeping the user interface calm and distraction-free to promote mental clarity.

Challenges we ran into The primary challenge was balancing the technical demands of the platform with the sensitive nature of the content. We had to ensure that our data architecture was not only efficient but strictly compliant with privacy standards regarding mental health data. Additionally, coordinating physical run groups at the UJ APB Campus while maintaining student attendance meant we had to build an automated, SMS-based reminder system to ensure consistent engagement, which required fine-tuning our notification triggers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are most proud of the successful pilot program that saw a 40% increase in weekly peer-to-peer check-ins among participants. We also successfully integrated a real-time "Support Finder" feature, allowing students to instantly locate campus-based food security resources and mental health counseling services. Seeing the first cohort move from hesitant participants to confident community leaders remains our biggest victory.

What we learned We learned that technology is often the enabler, not the solution. The most effective feature wasn't the fancy tracking—it was the manual, intentional community-building we did on the ground. We discovered that "scaling" in a mental health context isn't about more users; it's about the depth of the support provided. We also gained valuable insights into the intersection of physical exhaustion and emotional vulnerability, teaching us how to better time our workshops to match the energy levels of our students.

What's next for Starrunner The next phase is "Starrunner Connect," an expansion that integrates a broader alumni mentorship network. We plan to develop an AI-driven "Pathway Coach" that uses the data from our workshops and running sessions to provide personalized goal-setting advice to students. We are also looking to partner with more local NGOs to scale our food security initiatives, effectively making Starrunner a complete, end-to-end platform for student transition into the professional world.
