Inspiration

We are young women looking to apply for internships and placements in a workplace that is not always fully respecting of girls. We are tired of randomly applying to jobs hoping that they are safe and professional workplaces. We wanted to "flip the script" and empower female applicants to have the opportunity to make an informed decision about where they want to work. We explored and took inspiration from various ranking websites to design our system, including Tabulator https://tabulator.info/examples/6.3, which explicitly puts "male" first in their ranking system. This fueled us even more to "flip the script" and focus on women's needs in the workplace e.g percentage of women in leadership roles, maternity leave pay etc.

What it does

Our website asks companies to input some data related to male : female ratios and employee satisfaction and we use a system designed in R to perform data analysis and output a leaderboard / ranking style website that praises and encourages companies that support women in the workplace.

How we built it

Our website is built on the strong foundation of html and CSS, we then used javascript to add addition features such as being able to adapt the rank to each category and sort by top / bottom 50 percent of companies.

Our data analysis is primarily in R, although we used SQL to query our data, we used R to perform functions such as removing outliers and finding means and then producing detailed graphs based off these results.

Challenges we ran into

We are all mathematics students and so it was a nice challenge to have the opportunity to learn and understand new concepts in coding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We feel very proud to have created a fully functioning website considering our limited coding experience. We got to apply our data analysis skills to something that has a real world impact.

What we learned

We have gained a great deal of experience in organisation and teamwork, not to mention the new deeper understanding we have of html, SQL, CSS, javascript, and R.

What's next for Stark Rankings

We hope to keep working towards one day publishing our website.
