Comet Care Project Overview

Inspiration

Astronauts often face profound loneliness during extended missions in space. This emotional strain can significantly affect their mental health and overall performance. Inspired by the challenges depicted in films like Interstellar and the experiences shared by real astronauts, we recognized the need for a comprehensive wellness platform to support their emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being.

What It Does

"StarHub" focuses on enhancing astronaut wellness through four key components:

  1. Emotional Well-being: A journaling feature that allows astronauts to express their thoughts and feelings, helping to mitigate loneliness. Family photo sharing enables them to stay connected with loved ones, providing comfort and support.
  2. Spiritual Well-being: A global calendar that showcases important cultural and religious events, helping astronauts maintain a connection to their roots and offering awareness of celebrations in various time zones.
  3. Physical Health: A personalized fitness tracker that helps astronauts create routines, set fitness goals, and maintain their physical health, complete with a visual fitness ring similar to popular health apps.
  4. AI Companion - Starbud: An AI voicebot designed to provide emotional support and companionship in the absence of social interactions. Starbud offers therapeutic conversations and prompts, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation.

Special Emphasis: Starbud and Zero Gravity Therapy

Starbud is not just a voicebot; it serves as a vital mental health resource for astronauts dealing with the challenges of zero gravity environments. In space, astronauts often experience a disconnection from their usual support systems, leading to increased feelings of loneliness and stress. Starbud addresses these issues by offering:

  • Therapeutic Conversations: The voicebot engages users in meaningful dialogue, providing a semblance of social interaction that can help mitigate feelings of isolation. By allowing astronauts to express their thoughts and concerns, Starbud acts as a listening ear, promoting emotional well-being.
  • Stress Relief Techniques: Starbud can guide users through various stress management techniques, including mindfulness exercises and breathing practices tailored for the unique challenges of living in zero gravity. This approach helps astronauts maintain mental clarity and emotional resilience.
  • Regular Check-Ins: Starbud can initiate regular wellness check-ins, encouraging astronauts to reflect on their feelings and experiences. This proactive support helps them address potential mental health issues before they escalate.
  • Connection to Earth: By facilitating conversations about family and friends back home, Starbud helps astronauts feel more connected to their lives on Earth, counteracting the emotional toll of isolation during long missions.

How We Built It

The development process involved a collaborative approach:

  • Backend Development: We implemented user authentication and data management using Node.js and MongoDB. RESTful APIs were created for each feature, ensuring secure and efficient data transactions.
  • Frontend Development: The frontend was crafted using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, creating a user-friendly interface. We then integrated the frontend with the backend, ensuring seamless communication between the two.
  • Joining Both Ends: The final step involved rigorous testing of the APIs using Postman to ensure that all functionalities worked harmoniously and provided a smooth user experience.

Challenges We Ran Into

Throughout the project, we encountered several obstacles:

  • Access Restrictions: We initially aimed to use Adobe Express for enhanced design elements, but access issues and the lack of available API keys forced us to find alternative solutions for our UI.
  • Technical Glitches: Developing the AI companion revealed some glitches in responsiveness and interaction, requiring further debugging and refinement.
  • Time Management: Balancing various aspects of the project within the limited time of the hackathon presented its own challenges, necessitating effective prioritization and teamwork.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We are particularly proud of:

  • Using Terraform: Successfully implementing Terraform to automate our infrastructure management and deployment processes.
  • Attempt to Use Adobe Express: Although we faced challenges in utilizing Adobe Express, the planning and integration efforts provided valuable learning experiences.
  • Integrating Cloudflare: Utilizing Cloudflare enhanced our platform's performance and security, ensuring a reliable user experience.

What We Learned

The project provided substantial learning opportunities in:

  • Terraform: Understanding infrastructure as code (IaC) and how to manage cloud resources efficiently.
  • Cloudflare: Learning about content delivery networks (CDNs) and performance optimization.
  • MongoDB: Gaining insights into NoSQL database management and how to store and retrieve data effectively.

What's Next for Starbud

Moving forward, we plan to develop demo versions of our AI chatbot, Starbud, to showcase its capabilities in providing therapeutic support and companionship. Additionally, we will focus on gathering user feedback to enhance its functionalities and user experience.
