Inspiration
Stargazing is something that my friends and I do every summer. We go up to Communication Hill and just lie down, staring into space and even trying to make out constellations. This experience always had us longing for more spots to go, and a way to share them with others and view spots and other people's experiences with them at the same time, which is why I created Stargaze.app.
What it does
Stargaze.app lets users explore different places around the world they can go stargazing. It allows its users to submit any location, and then add a name and description to go along with it. Then, users can view these new locations on a map. To view all the notes and saved locations, you can navigate to the List tab, to view, edit, and delete your spots, incase you want to make some changes.
How we built it
I used HTML, CSS, and JS. I also used the Maps, Places, Geocode, and Astronomy API.
Challenges we ran into
I found this Hackathon 3 days ago, and as a 15-year-old with no friends, I put in around 8 hours per day over the last 2-3 days on my own to get this project done in time. I also had an issue with embedding all the necessary components, as well as making the submitted locations save and viewable in an appealing manner.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is my first ever serious project, as I'm new to this kind of development as a whole, and I've never used JavaScript before this. Regardless of whether or not I win any prize, this project has taught me a lot, and I'm proud to have an aesthetic web app working in just 2-3 days.
What we learned
I learned how to use JS, host my site locally, and use the many APIs I incorporated (and how to read pages worth of API documentation)
What's next for Stargaze.app
I added a star map tab, which currently just says coming soon, but within the next week, it will use Astronomy API to load astral projections of the submitted locations to allow users to identify individual stars, and even constellations.
