Inspiration
We wanted to work with something space-related, fitting the theme of exploring the unknown.
What we wanted it to do
Since it is not in a functioning state, this section is dedicated to what we wanted it to do.
Starfield was originally intended to be a WebGL app that would randomly take you to a cluster of stars as seen from Earth, with toggle-able info about the stars you see on the screen, and would allow you to draw your own constellations and share them via a Firebase database that would be accessible in-app.
How we built it
We used Unity as our WebGL base, and wrote our code primarily in C#. Since the app is web-based, it streams in data via a web request.
Challenges we ran into
Things were running mostly well until the shader development got stuck. This completely stopped our development momentum.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The CSV parser filters data points as we wanted, and would have been a good base for functionality had we gotten the shaders working as intended.
What we learned
Put in more time to learn technologies like the shaders before starting the project, since that was an especially large issue.
What's next for Starfield
Fixing the shaders would fix a lot of our issues, and then getting the UI set up as we originally intended.
