Synopsis

You’re an adventurer who has found themselves on an unknown planet. An asteroid crashed into the house of a local named Bob. Your mission is to help him rebuild and redecorate his house, but there is a catch, you don’t speak the language yet. To gather materials and furniture, you must learn the language through spelling and interact with the neighbors. By choosing to act with kindness, you unlock unique rewards while fostering friendships with the residents.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this project stems from the belief that language is the ultimate tool for human connection. For children, especially those navigating English as a second language, spelling can feel scary. Hence, we wanted to move beyond the traditional classroom and create an immersive experience where spelling serves a tangible, heartfelt purpose: the power to help and to belong.

By placing the player in the role of an adventurer aiding Bob on an unknown planet surrounded by strangers and the unfamiliar, we simulate the real-world vulnerability and the eventual triumph of adapting to a new environment. We want to show kids that learning a language is the first step toward communication, and through communicating with kindness, they can foster deep and lasting friendships. This journey is more than just about putting letters in the right order; it's about the emotional reward of turning strangers into friends. We aim to show children that through effective communication, they are fostering empathy and creating a community, one word at a time.

Challenges

We used Lua in ROBLOX Studio to build this game, which none of us had worked with before. Thus, it proved to be quite a challenge, especially with the many different elements of the game all of which had to interact in some way. For example, the inventory system had to connect to both the NPC dialogue system and open world, but with the spelling challenge system acting as interference between these linkages. In the process, however, we feel that we have learned a lot about ROBLOX Studio and acquired a great deal of knowledge about Lua.

Why This Game Works

Our design is heavily backed from educational research, showing that children acquire complex skills most effectively when they are embedded in social and personal narratives. Specifically, we align with the five characteristics of the UNICEF ‘Learning Through Play’ framework, ensuring our game is joyful, actively engaging, iterative, meaningful, and socially interactive. By moving away from abstract drills and into a 'socially-driven' environment, we leverage the power of contextual learning. In our world, a spelling mistake is merely a hurdle in a meaningful conversation with a friend in need. Through this game, we turn language into a tool for connection and community.
