Inspiration
All of us at one point wanted to be astronauts or astronomers when we were young but gave up on this because we were told to be either a math prodigy or be really diligent. But we are here to foster the love of space again in our youth with our platform showcasing various information related to space and more for space enthusiastic!✨
Our goal initially was to provide space enthusiasts with free, easy, access to intro level astronomy education through a main website with information about the moon, astronomy, solar system, live daily data, power packed weekly newsletter and more!
What it does
star seek is a public directory for information related to the moon, astronomy, solar system, sky watching and latest news with a power packed weekly newsletter about space and beyond. We've carefully developed the website to include the essential information about space and more for space enthusiastic and all people in general and free access to data which is updated daily.
How we built it
We built it with coffee and late nights, technology wise we developed the web app with mainly java script and technologies such as next js, react and used UI components provided by tailwind and as for the data we were able to get it through public and freemium available api's such as NASA public api, ipgeolocation, meteomatics and more. We used vercel to deploy the website under a free tier.
Challenges we ran into
We initially ran into a lot of errors. from falling into endless bugs and issues with the code, to miscommunication with team members. It was a lot. We also faced breaking production last second and not having enough time develop the features we had planned and having a redo of what we can add, being slightly late to submit and a LOT of last minutes bug fixes again.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Even though we were not able to develop all the features we are really proud for not backing out and committing to it regardless of the issues we faced. We were able to stick through it and get it done with. We also faced a tonne of friction from our devices and had issues with out internet for most of the hackathon duration regardless we pulled through and were able to complete most of the features we had planned. really proud of our team and project we developed. It's something.
What we learned
We learned a lot. from ideating, planning out things, assigning tasks, going over revisions, fixing endless bugs/issues last minute. It was nearly enough to not submit however we were able to complete it regardless and submit what I think is a great project that we're really proud of.
What's next for star seek
We have big plans for star seek. to reignite the love for space and bring back fond memories of it from our childhood we plan to form star seek as a 501(3) and work on providing more features on the platform with the help of interns and volunteer programs. really excited for what the future holds for star seek. looking forward to what we can get done for the fellow space enthusiasts out there
