Inspiration

"Tower of Hell" (Roblox) ; "Getting Over It" (Bennett Foddy) The game is a Platform climber on a sci-fi Spire, where the goal is to make it to the top, and is intentionally difficult. Missing a jump or hitting an obstacle results in falling and losing progress, sometimes significant progress.

What it does

The update does the following:

  • New Start Zone: a new welcome-station-style start zone has been added
  • New interactives: flickering star toys have been added for players to pick up, hold, or throw
  • New Leaderboard: a new Leaderboard added, tracking "trips to the Top" by player (to encourage progression)
  • Milestone Board added: providing a roadmap of the climb, and providing 'congrats!" for progressing
  • Mid-level Savepoints added: at the halfway point on each level, a Savepoint was added. If a player leaves the game and returns later, they will enter the game at their most recently reached Savepoint.
  • Level-start Savepoints added: at the start of each level, a Savepoint was added. Savepoints encourage players to take a break, whatever the reason, and return later to pick back up progressing through the climb.

How we built it

Updated using Blender, Horizon Worlds Desktop editor, and typescripting.

Challenges we ran into

as usual, the typescripting was a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The Savepoints. The game probably should have had those from the beginning, but time was a factor. The game needed the feature, and it turned out well.

What we learned

Learned more about scripting and the Desktop editor's features

What's next for Star Drop

If another thing were to be added to this game, it would be a player timer tracking how long the climb took, that pauses when they leave the game, or resets to zero when a reset door is entered (which, of course, resets the game), and a Leaderboard tracking those player times. Perhaps adding a clothing shop if the game does well.
